My father introduced me to jazz when I was young – he played sax. I remember listening to Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young LPs at an impressionable age. I tried to learn jazz from Mickey Baker’s book, the only one available at the time, but it was too difficult, so I turned to playing the blues, playing by ear along with Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter albums.
